SCOUTING REPORT:
Midwest High School Hockey League Prospects
Attention Hockey Scouts,
If you’re looking to preview prospective high school hockey talent, plan to attend the Midwest High School Hockey League’s year-end Championship Weekend Tournament, starting Friday, March 3, and ending Sunday, March 5, at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex in West Des Moines, Iowa.
The MHSHL is the premier high school league in USA Hockey’s Midwest Affiliate, representing the states of Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. The 13-team League is comprised of Iowa teams: Ames, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines Capitals, Des Moines Oak Leafs, Dubuque, Mason City, Quad City, Sioux City and Waterloo. Nebraska teams include Fremont, Lincoln and Omaha. Kansas City is the lone representative from Kansas. All teams offer Varsity and Jr. Varsity competition.
The League plays a 32-game schedule. The top-eight teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the Championship Weekend Tournament. This tournament is the League’s primetime, season-ending event that will award the League’s most prized trophy to the winner. The eight qualifiers square off Friday in single-elimination, quarterfinal games. The two winners of Saturday’s semifinal games advance to Sunday’s championship game.
2022-2023 MHSHL All-Stars and All-League
During its 47-year history, the MHSHL has earned national recognition and a reputation for players advancing to junior and college hockey. Most recently in 2018, the Sioux City Metros won the USA Hockey High School National Championships-Division II (teams with players from multiple schools). In 2021, the Omaha Junior Lancers repeated as national champions. Omaha has hosted the USA Hockey high school championships two times.
The League’s Team Midwest, a post-season all-star team, has successfully competed in America’s High School Hockey Showcase since 1990.
The affiliate organizes a preseason U18 all-star team comprised of MHSHL players. In 2018 the team won the Rocky Mountain Regional Silver Stick Championship, qualifying for the Silver Stick finals in Sarnia, Canada. The team was finally defeated after advancing to the championship game. This year’s team again won the Rocky Mountain Regional Silver Stick tournament, earning a trip to the finals in Canada.
The League’s mission statement is: “Competitive high school hockey scoring big on family and academic values.” This season 256 players will receive academic recognition for a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. An additional 45 graduating seniors will be presented with the "President’s Senior Academic Achievement Award" for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better throughout their high school career.
We encourage you to visit our website. The MHSHL is a member of the Pointstreak Scoring Network. You’ll find up-to-date standings, player statistics and complete tournament news.
When you attend, stop by the Executive Committee’s hospitality room. Introduce yourself and enjoy a cup of coffee and refreshments, along with some friendly conversation.
We look forward to seeing you in March!
Sincerely,
Todd Scebold
